I talk a lot about Africa and the immense poverty and hunger there, but I also have grown up volunteering and supporting local organizations. I think it is important to teach children the importance of using your time, talent, and resources to help those truly in need. That is also why I have been using my resource – my blog– for good, by supporting companies that give back as well as their campaigns that do good in this world. This post is brought to you by ConAgra Foods and The Motherhood in support of a hunger-free summer.
Why is the summer time important? 21.5 million kids rely on free or reduced-price meals during the school year, but when school is out for the summer it means they may be at risk of hunger. Only 2.3 million children participate in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). That number is low compared to the school year because of low awareness, a lack of transportation, or the limited availability of summer meal programs.
This is the fourth year of ConAgra’s Hunger-Free Summer program and since the beginning they have supported the delivery of more than 2.5 million meals and snacks to children struggling with hunger over the summer. This summer, 29 food banks in 20 states will use Hunger-Free Summer grants – ranging from $20,000 to $50,000 – to overcome barriers and step up and help fill the gap for children in need.
How can you help?
By simply watching this video featuring Hunger-Free supporter, actor Chris O’Donnell, until the end, ConAgra will donate the monetary equivalent of one meal to Feeding America. Don’t forget to share with your family, friends and social media followers!
Use a few simple minutes of your time to give a meal to a child in need to take steps to make this summer a hunger-free summer.
