Last week, on World Food Day, I attended an event here in Des Moines for the ONE campaign. The mission of ONE’s new campaign is to put sweet potatoes on the menu and nutrition on the global agenda. Help save 25 million children and empower them to live up to their full potential.
Sweet Potatoes are easy to grow, packed with vitamin A and can literally save lives. 1 billion people suffer from malnutrition and 2.4 million children will die this year as a result {source}
This presentation really hit home with me especially since I just got back from Ghana the week before. Most of the children in Africa are severely malnourished and I witnessed many food-related issues with my children as a result of their lack of nutrition.
A major part of most of the African countries is agriculture and many are substance farmers- which means they only grow enough food to survive. If (orange) sweet potatoes were more prevalent in these countries, the extra vitamins in sweet potatoes could potentially save hundreds of thousands of people from death.
Even though World Food Day has passed and we sent over 202,000+ tweets to send a message to our nation’s leaders, you can still be a part of this campaign. Here’s how:
- Go to One.org and sign the petition. Tell world leaders to put nutrition on the agenda and save 25 million children from chronic malnutrition by 2016.
- Become a campus leader: The ONE Campus Leader program gives student leaders and advocates the opportunity to recruit, support, and manage a team of peers in structured and creative advocacy campaigns that engage students on campus in the fight against extreme poverty and disease. Leaders are eligible for internship credit.
- Ask your congregation to join ONE against hunger.
- Become a ONE mom!
