Names are important. Most Moms usually buy baby naming books and scour countless baby naming websites as soon as they find out they are pregnant. Some Moms already have their children’s names picked out before they are conceived. Names are often chosen just because they sound nice, but others are chosen because of the meaning or family history.
Colton: The name Colton is an English baby name. In English the meaning of the name Colton is: From the dark town.
People with this name have a deep inner desire to create and express themselves, often in public speaking, acting, writing or singing. They also yearn to have beauty around them in their home and work environment. (SheKnows.com)
As you can probably tell, we didn’t give our son Colton the name because of it’s meaning. We wanted to give him a unique name, one that when he went to school there wouldn’t be four other boys with the same name. We wanted to steer clear of the celebrity baby naming trend of naming your child after inanimate objects (Apple, Ocean, Blanket, Rocket, Blue which are actual names of real living children.)
We were young and chose the name mostly because we liked it, but when I have more children I will focus more on the meaning of the name.
TJ and I look like babies ourselves! We both look about 15 in these photos!
If you’ve been reading my blog lately, you may know that we are adopting. We are not matched with a child yet, but with international adoption, the renaming of children is common. In Ghana, a few popular boy names are: Kofi, Kwesi and Yaw, but you will also hear names like Samuel, Emmanuel and Joseph.
We would never want to “get rid” of our son’s birth name, but if we did choose to rename him we would keep his birth name as his middle name. I can’t wait to see his face and hear his name!
It wasn’t easy, but that is how I decided on my baby’s name. How did you decide on your baby’s name? Or do you have a great story on how your parents decided on your name? Tell me for a chance to win a year’s supply of cards from Cardstore.com!
