Local: The Des Moines Blank Park Zoo, A Family Activity

Zoo’s are always fun family activities. Now that we are permanent residents of Des Moines, Colton and I decided to take a trip down to the Blank Park Zoo with Grandma, something I haven’t done since childhood. Admission is only $5.95 for children, so this is a relatively cheap family activity. Check with your local zoo for special events. On September 29th, Jack Hanna will be at the Blank Park Zoo and admission is $10 for children. The Blank Park Zoo even has an event for the adults called the Zoo Brew, which is every June and July and includes brew, music, food, and activities.

The Blank Park Zoo manages 49 acres of land. Of that, 22 acres have been developed into animal exhibits or facilities. Currently there are 104 different animal species and 1,484 animal specimens cared for at the Blank Park Zoo. Colton loved the lions, but when I was little I remember I was fascinated by the crazy fish pond.

My mom took Colton to the zoo last year and he was deathly afraid while on the train. This year he loved it!

If you are a frequent visitor to the zoo, check out about becoming a member. Members receive special discounts on events, classes and more. We loved our time at the Blank Park Zoo! If you happen to be in the Des Moines area, the zoo is worth your time!

Beat the Heat- Swim In A Bucket!

My cousin is actually the same age as my son. Now that we’ve moved back to Iowa, they have numerous play dates throughout the week. Dory is a “princess”- the ultimate girly girl. My son is all boy. Trucks, wrestling, and sports are his thing. Combine the two of them- and you have an unpredictable show!

The day after my sister’s graduation party, the weather was quite warm. Everyone was lounging on the deck and the two little munchkins decided to start playing in the buckets we had full of ice and pop the previous day. They played for HOURS. There is a pool at my parents house, but nope- the two of them had as much fun in a bucket full of pop cans and water.

Is That You Justin Bieber?

You’d think after almost three years being surrounded by big and tough college baseball players (Hubby is in his last year of D1 college baseball)and four uncles whose lives are centered around sports, that Colton would be like some sports-obsessed little boy. It may have been the two-hour trips (filled with singing to pass time) to the doctors office throughout my whole pregnancy that introduced Colton to my singing, because he spends almost every waking hour belting out tunes.

Here is one of the many videos I have of him singing. He’s singing only one line of Jason Derulo’s “In My Head” over and over and over. The video is long in some parts, but I love at the very end when he proclaims he’s Justin Bieber!
