Do-It-Yourself Candy and Dessert Table

I’m no Amy Atlas, but I wanted to create a simple, low-budget dessert table for my sister’s high school graduation. With a combination of bulk candy, homemade treats, and specialty desserts, I created a dessert table that anyone could recreate. This dessert table was positioned in the four season porch on a beautiful day, so I didn’t want to hang a background to block the sunlight and view of the trees. You could add decorations like flowers, banners or balloons to make it more festive.

I love the look of similar colored candy in clear jars and vases. Start searching the Internet for bulk candy in your preferred colors. A few websites you can start are: Candy Direct, Candy Warehouse, and Bulk Candy Store. We purchased M&Ms, gummi bears, lemon balls, sixlets, bananans, gumballs and a few others. We only had to purchase a few glass jars, the rest we had around the house. Target surprisingly has a great selection at a low cost.

Fleurir chocolates sent me a box of their handmade chocolates that not only taste great, but look great too. With flavors like Sesame Hazelnut, Pink Peppercorn and Carrot Cake, these chocolates are sure to be a conversation starter. I recommend a combination of candy, chocolates and desserts for your dessert table, depending on the occasion.

Place your largest item in the middle. A tiered cake or cupcake platter would work well here. If you aren’t planning on having either of those, to create height, place sturdy boxes under your tablecloth or use pedestals. Use a variety of different shaped vases and jars, you don’t want everything to look uniform.

In addition to the homemade cookies and brownies, a few specialty desserts makes things more exciting. I adore Better Bit of Butter cookies, which are some of the most delicious cookies I’ve ever tasted. I sent some awhile back to my husband’s aunt when she had a baby and her kid’s loved them. Christine sent over some “mini BB’s” which are perfect for parties.

See those Zebra and Damask decorated cookies? Those are actually chocolate covered ores from Sweeties by Kim on Etsy. These are perfect for kid’s parties, because almost all kids love Oreos, right? But these are extra special Oreos and they are absolutely gorgeous. Kim is a sweetie too!

If you are thinking about creating a dessert table for your next party of event, I would recommend browsing through Amy Atlas’ creations. The one I made was very simple, with more of a color scheme than an actual theme, but you can be as creative as you want to be.  Check out this Woodland themed table or this Circus creation. The sky is the limit in making a beautiful dessert table!

What Is The Most Popular Baby Shower Game?

Are you responsible for throwing a baby shower for one of your friends or relatives?  I’m sure you want to make it a memorable event.  There are a couple of easy things you can do to make this happen.

1. After all of the women have arrived, go around the room and ask them to introduce themselves to each other and to let the group know how they first met the mother-to-be.  I’ll bet you’ll hear some very interesting stories.

2. You will want to choose some easy and fun games to play.  Here’s what I believe is the most popular baby shower game and I think you’ll find it a lot of fun.

Game: Never Say the Word “Baby”

You will need to do a little bit of preparation for this game.  You will need to make a necklace out of yarn and safety pins for each of the guests.  String the same number of safety pins on each piece of yarn and ask each woman to put the necklace on as soon as she arrives. As soon as everyone has introduced themselves announce the rules of this game, which are very simple.  Any time anyone says the word “baby” during the baby shower, the first woman who calls it out will get a safety pin from the person who said the word. At the end of the baby shower give a prize to the woman who has accumulated the most pins.

Easy New Years & Superbowl Party Appetizers

meatballs

Hosting a party is always an unnecessary stress. The main concern always seems to be the food- “What should I make?” and “How much?”  When it comes to New Years and Super Bowl parties, the easiest and most popular choice is to make a variety of appetizers. Something I always keep on hand for occasions like this (and quick dinners) are frozen meatballs. I usually throw some into my crock pot with pasta sauce and voila, boil pasta and dinner is ready.

Stephanie Ashcroft, author of 101 Things To Do With Meatballs, states in her book- to find the freshest and highest quality meatballs, avoid companies who do not specialize in them. They usually use leftover scraps from other products to make the meatballs. A company who is known for their meatballs is Farm Rich.

101 Things to Do with Meatballs features recipes like meatball sliders, sesame stir fry, meatball pizza, Tortellini Meatball Stew, Chipotle Meatball Pasta and more. This cookbook is a great resource for quick dinners and includes appetizers that are a must-have for your parties.

Farm Rich not only has meatballs, but they carry cheese sticks, pizza slices, mozzarella bites, mushrooms, quesadillas, paninis, peppers and pizzaria bites- all ideal for a New Years or Superbowl party.

Other great appetizers found in your local grocery store are SeaPak products, which includes butterfly shrimp, popcorn shrimp, shrimp scampi, tempura shrimp, coconut shrimp, shrimp alfredo, light and crispy shrimp, tilapia tenders, crab cakes and a ton more. I often purchase SeaPak products because of their quality and taste and I know I will stock up on these during Lent! Below is a super-easy recipe, sure to be a hit at your new years and Superbowl parties.
