I Have A Beautiful Garden, But No Green Thumb

I knew when we first bought this house I wanted to have a garden. The backyard is huge and I’ve always wanted to just walk out the door to get ingredients for dinner. My husband thought it was a good idea too, so we came up with a plan, but we couldn’t just till up the ground (my idea), that would be too easy. TJ had to practice his handyman skills and build a raised-bed garden. Now, I didn’t want to spend a whole bunch of money on the garden because that would defeat the purpose and I didn’t know if anything would actually grow. I have never planted flowers, let alone a garden in my life.

I tried to plant last week and then it was supposed to frost, so I put everything on hold and I’ve kept delaying because I have absolutely no clue what I’m doing and it seems the dirt is as hard as a rock. I think I need to bring someone from the Better Homes and Gardens Test Garden over here to give me some pointers (They are right across town).

All you gardeners out there, can you give some pointers?

The Importance of Survival Kits (Vlog)

As a teenager I was like most, living in a dream world with no realization of unexpected life-changing situations happening to me. As I grew wiser with years, and especially after reading Terri Blackstock’s Last Light, book one of a series which depicts a middle class family dealing with the unexpected terror of America losing all its electrical power, its communications, its transportation, its financial system, and its government leadership, I realized that anything could happen. Although this story may be far-fetched, it made me realize that I am not ready for even the smallest of disasters. Heck, I didn’t even have a flashlight handy for power outages!

Like I said in the video, my motto when it comes to these type of things are,  “it’s better to be safe than sorry.” Even if I don’t use the kit, it just gives me  peace of mind to have on hand. If you would like to purchase the survival kit featured in the video, you can buy it at Survival Buys Online for $30. Now, this is a smaller kit, so I would recommend looking into the Essentials Survival kit or the Children’s Survival Kit.

Thank you to Survival Buys Online for providing the kit for the video. You can follow them on twitter @SurvivalBuys

Spaghetti and Meatball Cake Pops

I love adorable sweet treats. From cakes, cupcakes, and now the newest craze – cake pops. Soon you will be seeing these bite-sized works of art at every birthday party and sold in every bakery. Learn how to make your own with the help of Wilton’s Pops! Sweets on a Stick Book. Wilton products and classes have helped me create many delectable treats including my husband’s golf birthday cake last year and these festive mini pumpkin cakes for Fall.

When I heard Wilton was having a cake pop blogger contest, I just had to join in. I was also one of the first 50 bloggers to register, so Wilton sent me all of the cake pop supplies I need to test out my creations.  With my many trials and tribulations, I present to you….

Spaghetti and Meatballs Cake Pops!

If this is your first time making cake pops, I must admit, just like decorating cupcakes or cakes, practice makes perfect. There are a few tricks however, which can help you with the process. To make Spaghetti and Meatball Cake Pops, you must first make the basic cake pop recipe in your Wilton Cake Pops book and follow the “How To Mix a Cake Pop” instructions on their website. I recommend using a yellow cake mix and chocolate frosting, it’s delicious!

Besides all of the ingredients for making the basic cake pops, for making these Spaghetti and Meatball pops, I recommend the Wilton Chocolate Pro Electric Melting Pot, chocolate candy melts, the Wilton Natural Colors Fondant, Multi Pack(I mixed the pink and light brown to get an off-white color), and Wilton gel frostings in red, dark red, and/or black, found in a craft store such as Michaels. You can find a full list of cake pop supplies here.

Here are some quick tips when making cake pops:

  • Make sure you follow the directions and place your cake balls in the freezer for at least two hours before you insert the sticks. I also like to roll them again after those two hours, to create a smoother circle.
  • Keep your chocolate melting pot rim clear of melted chocolate. Chocolate can easily mess up your sticks if you’re not careful!
  • The more chocolate you have in your melting pot, the easier it will be for you to successfully dip your cake pop.

Making these Spaghetti and Meatball cake pops is easy!

  1. Dip all of your cake pops in the (brown) melted chocolate and let harden.
  2. Cover the hardened cake pops with the gel frosting to make it look like spaghetti sauce. You can use whatever color you like, I mixed black and red. Let frosting dry.
  3. Meanwhile, you can make the Spaghetti out of fondant. I first mixed the pink and light brown colored fondant and rolled it quite thin. I then cut the fondant into long strips to resemble spaghetti.
  4. Melt red candy melts in your chocolate melting pot.
  5. Turn your cake pop meatball upside down and place a little red chocolate on the cake pop close to the stick. Start curling your fondant Spaghetti around the base of the cake pop in the red chocolate until you have your desired amount of spaghetti!
  6. Eat!
