Worthy Children-Focused Causes to Support This Holiday Season
It’s right around the corner. The hustle and bustle of the Christmas season is upon us. And as you jot down what to buy for your family and friends this year, take a minute to add a couple of worthy causes to your list, charities that support children in need on local, national and international levels.
It’s as simple as filling a standard-sized shoe box with little toys and hygiene necessities, but to a child who has nothing at Christmas, that box is the greatest gift! Operation Christmas Child is an annual global outreach initiative spearheaded by Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian charity run by Franklin Graham, son of well-known preacher, Billy Graham. Operation Christmas Child has reached countless children at Christmas time since its inception. This charity offers a great way to involve your children in the spirit of giving this season as they can help you choose items for your shoe box and help to pack it!
For suggestions on what to pack in your shoe box, free downloadable labels and for shoe box drop-off locations in your area, visit Samaritan’s Purse to get started. Boxes must be dropped off during National Collection Week—November 16-23—so get shopping!
While the prospect of no gifts at Christmas is a sad thought, celebrating without family is even more difficult for a child. When a parent is a part of the prison system, a child suffers greatly. Separated from one another on physical and emotional levels, this pain is magnified at Christmas. You have a parent who can’t provide a gift for his or her child; you have a child who has nothing to open on Christmas morning. Angel Tree Ministries seeks to mend the families affected by incarceration. At Christmas, donations of money and gifts are accepted and distributed to children of prison inmates around the nation. Started by a former inmate, Angel Tree Ministries has made a positive impact on prison families at Christmas and at all times of the year. Oh, this is great information. We are going to focus on giving with our five year old this year and I’ve thought about checking them out. Thanks!
This is such an awesome idea. I need to get my kids more involved in stuff like this.

Thanks for the great idea
We have a local organization that does this. I try to participate in something each year. It’s not easy, but even something small can make a difference.
