Review: HoMedics Restore Water Purification System

I have this “thing” about my water and I am very picky.
I don’t drink water from our tap, because it tastes funny to me. Remember that movie “Signs” with Mel Gibson? Well, I’m a lot like his daughter played by Abigail Bresslin. She had all those half empty glasses of water and said she wouldn’t drink them because they had dust in them, or amoebas, etc.
Yup, that’s me.
That being said, I was more than willing to volunteer to review the new HoMedics Restore Water Purification System.
The first thing I noticed about this purification system was how different it was from other “pitcher-type” filtration systems I had tried. It has the similar type of carbon filter that almost all filtration systems have, but it also uses a UV light to take the filtering process one step further. This UV light helps remove bacteria, viruses and more.
The following information, straight from Tiffany Hsu, a member of Restore’s Launch Team says, “Restore is California certified for microbiological water purification, a first for a water pitcher utilizing UV technology and is Gold Seal Certified to National Sanitation Foundation standards by the Water Quality Association. UV Technology has been used for over 60 years for its germicidal properties in hospitals and laboratories. For the first time, an application of this unique germ-killing technology is available for home use in an affordable, easy to use water pitcher.
It takes a little while to get things set up for this system. You need to clean out the carbon filter, and run about two pitchers worth of water through the new filter to flush out the loose carbons. But after that, you plug in the UV light and in 60 seconds you are done! You unplug the UV light and can start drinking.
The water is good – very clean tasting and crisp.
Overall, I liked the system and can see myself using it. I really like the fact that it is easy to tell if you’ve had your 8 glasses of water for the day because that’s exactly what the pitcher holds. It’s a little big, so you have to make room for it in the refrigerator, but the size is comparable to other filtration pitchers.
The unit runs about $100 and for now is only available on the HoMedics website. However, with the holidays approaching, it might be in some stores that already carry HoMedics products like WalMart, Target, Kohls, etc. (I don’t know this for a fact, but it would be worth checking out the stores.) While it might seem a little expensive, part of the cost comes from the UV technology to remove the bacteria and viruses.
The replacement filter is very reasonably priced on the HoMedics website for only $7.99 and needs to be changed about every 40 gallons. So, if you are drinking a pitcher a day, it will last you almost 6 weeks.
On a list of pros and cons of this pitcher, it has mostly pros. The only “con” is a concern that the filters will not be available if they change the model. Based on my previous experience with other filtration systems (from other manufacturers), they change the pitcher design and then you can’t find the filters anymore. That being my only concern, I will keep enjoying the water for now and have peace of mind knowing that its bacteria and virus free!
