we using our food more efficiently. water used to boil vegetables is used as a vitamin rich base for soup. larger recipes are prepared, frozen, and use item that are on sale. branded washing detergent is mixed with a low cost brand. the garden vegetable base has been expanded. All of this decreases costs

From the Common Sense Community, I learned an interesting tip submitted by Sherry in Missouri:
I barbecue for one whole day every 2 to 3 months. I barbecue all different types of meat: ribs, pork tenderloin, chicken, hamburgers, bratwurst, country ribs and pork steaks. After barbecuing all the meat I put the amount needed for a supper into a zip loc freezer bags and put into the freezer. Whenever we feel like having barbeque it’s already done. Just take out of the freezer and thaw. Put the meat on a cookie sheet and in the oven at 250 degrees; in 30 to 45 minutes the meat is heated through. It’s really a time saver, and it’s a lot nicer to have it done without having to barbecue all the time.

I’m trying to bring my own lunch to work. The store-bought, easlily stored in a desk-drawer meals give me heart-burn and weren’t really filling. And then there’s the fact that they have all those preservitives and lots of salt. It’s easier to make lunch in the evening than morning.

Getting my shopping done while my daughter is at preschool. It will be so less stressful to do it all alone and then when she’s home, we’ll have time to play.
Comment by Betty N on 10 October 2009:
We are doing several things. We had a moisture problem under a part of our carpet and it drove my husbands allergy crazy. We just had it pulled up; a moisture test done; and a new flooring will be put in in the next few days. Eating wise, we eat a lot of chicken; we buy chicken breasts when they are on sale and grind our own ground chicken. The ground chicken then takes the place of formerly beef dishes such as chili, meatloaf, hamburgers, meatballs, etc. It is a more healthful take on these dishes. I also fix a lot of chicken breast recipes and we can enjoy chicken for several days in a week and never feel like we are having the same thing.
We are also “decluttering”…it gives a more peaceful feeling not to see so much clutter and things we never use laying around and we have passed the books along to the GoodWill book store, some items to needy through churches, some to the Habitat for Humanity resale shop, etc.

Here’s a tip I learned at the site regarding Halloween costumes you can make in TEN minutes:
Whether you’re invited to an impromptu Halloween party or are just tired of spending a fortune at costume shops, consider these creative costumes that are assembled from gear you already have around the house. Modify them with makeup and accessories to give them your own special style!
Super Fan
o Supplies needed: Your favorite team sweatshirt, hat, foam finger and face paint.
o Assembly: Dress in your most outlandish combination of team colors and paint your face and body to match. Extra points for recreating the team logo across your face!
Boxing champ
o Supplies needed: baggy gym shorts, tank top (for the ladies), white socks and sneakers, bathrobe, felt lettering, tape for hands.
o Assembly: Cut the letters of your last name out of felt or paper and attach them to the back of the robe. Dress up as the champ and tape up your hands for battle. Add face paint as desired to achieve a post-fight look.
Roman god or goddess
o Supplies needed: a large flat sheet or 5-6 yards of fabric, any small-leafed, green plant (or a coat hanger and fake leaves), chunky gold bracelet, sandals.
o Assembly: Wrap the sheet around you toga-style. Weave the plant into a laurel or shape a coat hanger in a circle to fit your head and attach leaves to it.

Comment by Lauralee Hensley on 11 October 2009:
From this month forward we are no longer going to fry any of our meats, we will broil or bake them using a drip pan. That way the meats will not be absorbing up any of the oils.
I already do the power cooking method, where you cook up a couple of weeks worth of dinners on one day a week and freeze them, thereby making quick defrost and warm up meals.
Changes to improve my home will be done by simply rearranging furniture. Since we don’t have the money at the moment to do any home improvements at this time.
Changes to improve my happiness will be done in the form of continuing to train our new large dog to leave the small dog alone, that way he’ll soon be behaving correctly making our home a happier and quieter one.
Comment by Lauralee Hensley on 11 October 2009:
Sticky Shower Rod & HooksDo your shower curtain hooks stick on the rod when opening or closing? Dampen a SCOTT® Paper Towel with baby oil & wipe the entire rod with the oil-soaked towel. No more sticky hooks. Works with plastic or metal hooks and the baby oil smells great. Any time the hooks start to stick, do it again. Mine last about 4 – 6 months.
I learned this tip above at Scott’s Common Sense. I’ll be using it today as I happen to have this problem.

Keep a log of everything I spend money on. Keep envelopes on hand listed with each bill, how much it is/how much I paid and when I pay. Vitamins and pills everyday at the same time, so keep them in the same spot.
As far as happiness, find my positive motivators, list out my goals and map out how my motivators get me to my goals. Then, put it in action!

I love this tip, since my children go through so many magic markers! “Markers seem to dry out fast. Before buying new ones try dipping them in distilled vinegar. Dab/dry off the excess and test before using on paper.”

Know your learning style. If you learn by hearing, repeat the information out loud. If you learn by reading or writing, put it in writing and read it a few times. Use frequent reminders. Frequent exposure to information helps it work its way into your long-term memory. Don’t expect to remember a lot of detail after one exposure to a new concept.

My change has been an on going process since I decided last December that I wanted to pursue my graduate degree. I began by finding volunteer work with a current grad student, then I enrolled in summer classes to have more current references (I’m going on 29 and graduated when I was 20), then I picked out schools and just this Monday I submitted my final application materials. This is the biggest step I have ever made in my life and I can’t believe that I’m actually doing it but it is the pursuit of a dream I have had for a long time and is definitely going to make my life and happiness level better!

I found one interesting cooking tip over there.
Instead of using a knife and fork to cut pancakes, I use a pizza cutter. It cuts through a stack of pancakes easily and is less messy.
Never thought of it!
