Smelly Washer: Have Smelly Clothes?
I don’t have a problem with a Smelly Washer, but when I heard about this product, I knew exactly who could try it out: My mom. Her front loaders don’t drain very well so it makes all the clothes, especially the towels, smell like mildew. I am visiting her this week so I had to test it out. All you do is put a cap full in the washer with the clothes, agitate for two minutes, and let sit for two hours. The bottle said that would solve the problem…and it did.
From the website…”SmellyWasher is a granulated powder with the consistency of table salt. It is sent via US Postal in a 12 oz plastic bottle. There is enough cleaner in each bottle for 24 cleanings. This should be enough to clean your washer and any towel or clothing that may have picked up any moldy odor and keep them odor-free for up to 1 year! Smelly Washer Cleaner is guaranteed to eliminate washing machine odor, fungus, and mildew from any top load or front load washing machine by simply adding 1 level cap (1 tbsp.) to the detergent dispenser or directly into the tub. Agitate in a hot setting and your washer will CLEAN ITSELF!”
I was pretty pleased with the results. I remember when I still lived at my parents house and I kept saying, “Mom, your towels stink!” My mom started buying all the fancy smelling detergent, but it didn’t solve the problem, it just covered it up a little. Well…. I am pleased to say my parent’s house is stink-free. (Besides the fact that there are 3 pre-teen and teen boys!)
Get the chance to eliminate that nasty smell from your washing machine! 3 winners will get one bottle of Smelly Washer. How to enter? Go to SmellyWasher.com and tell us a fact about Smelly Washer. Come back here and leave a comment.
Giveaway ends April 24th

Product is all natural – they have removed all scents and dyes used in a previous version in order to meet all natural standards.
It’s not a fact about the product, but it was interesting to read what they site as 3 causes of bad odor. Primary cause is overuse of detergent, especially liquid. Interesting, if you have an odor issue the instinctive reaction is to add more detergent … which then makes it worse.

Using fabric softener contributes to the smell because it builds up residue on the tub of the washer and odor causing mold grows on the residue! Crazy!

I found out this:
“The third not-so-common reason for clothes washer smells is using mainly cold water for washing. Hot water dissolves detergent residue much better. If this is you it’s necessary to do a hot soak at least once a week. This is a perfect opportunity to soak soiled dishrags, etc..”

It only takes one cap to eliminate the odor. We have hard water and this stuff would really help with the stink.
Comment by Lisa on 23 April 2009:
I just tried it. I had to do it a couple times to get the smell out. But that’s typical for a really stinky washer. You’re right about the detergent thing. You are only supposed to use a tablespoon for a normal load of laundry, more for heavily soiled (sox, dishrags, etc.)
